Oliver Lovis is 2 years old and has rhabdomyosarcoma of the skull. The NHS have been fabulous and are sending him to the USA in a few weeks for 3 months for a state of the art radiotherapy called proton therapy as part of his treatment. He will have a few weeks of tests at the start then 9 weeks of daily proton therapy under general anaesthetic Monday to Friday. The hope is that, with proton rather than usual radiotherapy, he will suffer less long term brain damage from the radiation although, as he is so young, we have been told to expect that he will still need long term medical and educational support after beating this cancer. He will continue to have his three weekly chemotherapy as an inpatient while in the USA.
The NHS pay for flights for parents and Ollie (but not siblings), basic accommodation and for small car hire. We will be taking our 10 month old daughter with us so will need to pay the upgrade for flights, accomodation and car hire/seats etc for the whole family to go. We also need to pay for 3 months of travel insurance for the whole family in the US, to live abroad for 3 months while not working and paying a mortgage in the uk. We may also need help with childcare costs for our daughter if Ollie becomes very sick while away. We are still finding out about costs but they are mounting!
Any unspent money raised will be kept in trust for Oliver to provide for his future additional medical and educational needs. - See more at www.youcaring.com/oliverlovis
